Peace Circle: Students Lead in Conflict Resolution

In a world where conflict is often misunderstood, students at Bishop Secondary School Mukono are showing what peace-building looks like in action. Through the Peace Circle Project, select students are trained in peer counseling, emotional intelligence, and mediation to help resolve issues among their peers.

Whether it’s handling misunderstandings, managing peer pressure, or helping a fellow student through a personal struggle, the Peace Circle is creating safe spaces for honest conversations and healing.

“This is about listening and walking with someone through their problem,” said Samuel, a Senior Six peer counselor. “Sometimes all someone needs is to feel understood.”

The initiative is guided by the school’s counseling department, which holds monthly workshops for Peace Circle members on topics like communication skills, empathy, and managing stress. These students are then available during break time and lunch to offer peer support, report serious issues, and encourage emotional wellness.

One of the most celebrated successes was a school-wide anti-bullying week led entirely by Peace Circle members. It included skits, testimonials, and a pledge wall where students committed to kindness and respect.

Teachers and parents have praised the initiative, noting a noticeable drop in behavioral issues and a more supportive school culture. “Students are learning that leadership is about service,” said the school counselor. “And that healing can start with a conversation.”

The Peace Circle is not only preparing learners to face life with compassion and maturity — it’s making Bishop Secondary School Mukono a true sanctuary of learning, support, and love.
