Empowering the Girl Child: Girls’ Voice Project Launches at Bishop’s

Bishop Secondary School Mukono has taken a powerful step toward female empowerment with the launch of the Girls’ Voice Project. This student-led initiative was created to give girls a safe space to express themselves, build confidence, and rise as leaders within the school and beyond.

The project includes monthly forums that tackle real-life issues such as menstrual health, early marriage, gender equality, mental well-being, and academic confidence. The girls also organize community outreach days, where they speak to girls in nearby primary schools about staying in school and believing in their dreams. They are mentored by female staff and alumni who serve as role models.

“Girls need a space where they are not just heard, but listened to,” says Ritah, a Senior Five student and co-founder of the project. “This project is about lifting each other up and proving that we can lead, speak, and shine.”

The school administration has fully embraced the initiative, allocating time in the co-curricular calendar for Girls’ Voice meetings and activities. Special guests — including doctors, women leaders, and past students — are often invited to share their stories and inspire.

One of the most impactful sessions so far focused on menstrual hygiene, where sanitary pads were distributed to students in need. The project leaders are also advocating for a permanent changing room in the girls’ dormitory and a pad bank for emergencies.

The Girls’ Voice Project is changing the atmosphere at Bishop’s, giving female students the tools and support they need to thrive. It is a reflection of the school’s commitment to gender equity, personal development, and nurturing every student’s full potential. With girls leading the way, the future of Bishop Secondary School Mukono is not only bright — it’s bold.
