At Bishop Secondary School Mukono, students are doing more than just studying — they are actively taking part in protecting the environment through a school-wide initiative known as the Green Bishop Project. This student-led campaign focuses on environmental conservation, awareness, and action. From planting trees to organizing clean-up drives around the school and nearby communities, the learners have shown deep commitment to building a greener future.
Since the project’s launch earlier this year, over 300 trees have been planted across the school campus and in surrounding areas. These trees not only improve the air quality and beauty of the school but also serve as learning tools for Agriculture and Biology classes. The initiative is supported by the school’s Environment Club, which now boasts over 100 active members across all classes.
“We are not waiting for tomorrow — we’re starting today,” says Lydia, a Senior Four student and club president. The students organize awareness campaigns about climate change, the importance of tree planting, and waste reduction. The school has also introduced sorting bins for proper waste disposal and encourages students to carry refillable water bottles to reduce plastic use.
Through the Green Bishop Project, students are learning responsibility, leadership, and the value of giving back to their environment. This is more than a project — it is a movement that lives the school’s motto: Love and Work. By encouraging environmental consciousness, Bishop Secondary School Mukono is raising a generation that not only excels in academics but also takes care of the earth they will inherit.
The school administration has promised to keep supporting these projects, with plans to start a small tree nursery in 2026 to sustain future planting efforts.
